Vincera Foundation fosters break-through research, specialized education, and profound innovation.

The medical conditions collectively known as “core injuries” were born out of Dr. William C. Meyers’ discovery in the early 1980s that medicine had a misunderstanding of the basic anatomy and physiology of the pubic symphysis, the muscles that attach to it, and the hip. From that time, he has pioneered diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention protocols for core injuries. Vincera has partnered with the world’s leading experts on hip preservation, core anatomy, radiology, rehabilitation, athletic training, sports medicine, plus other experts. This team has conducted much research and generated peer reviewed research publications on this topic. Even after all of these advances, there still remain basic questions about the anatomy of the core. Vincera is the epicenter of the search for the answers.

Research Programs

Spearheaded by surgeons, research is focused on expanding the extensive work to date with a research fellowship program and conducting cutting-edge research, education and innovation in the following areas:

Anatomic Research — to study, educate and innovate our understanding of the pathophysiology of core injuries. Research includes: descriptions of the subtle anatomy and biomechanics of the core (we are currently examining the posterior muscles; including piriformis, superior and inferior gemelli, and obturator internus), exploration of the hip-core muscle interaction, and defining how anatomic variations influence muscle load, efficiency, and function.

Imaging Research — to improve sensitivity and specificity of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques in diagnosing patients with core injuries for the purpose of monitoring clinical treatment and outcomes.

Clinical Research — conducting outcomes-based research using clinical data that aids both physicians and patients in making more informed treatment decisions and improving patient management.

Basic Science — conducting biological studies (in conjunction with other facilities) that investigate the process of healing and scar formation within the core muscles (with attention to various clinical interventions including injections of corticosteroids and pro-inflammatory mediators such as PRP), and effects of degenerative arthritis in the hip on the core musculature with the goal of developing innovative approaches and treatments.

Biomechanics — utilizing a multi-disciplined approach to study joint function of the hip and pelvis to better understand the core musculature and their disorders by using diagnostic imaging and biomechanical studies such as motion analysis and muscle function testing to develop more effective non-operative treatment, postoperative rehabilitation protocols, timely intervention, and moving innovative scientific knowledge into clinical practice.

Education Programs

Education is a key component of the program. The Foundation partners with top medical schools to develop medical and research fellowships to train the next generation of physicians to heal move the specialty forward. The Foundation offers continuing education and training programs for physicians, allied health professionals, coaches and the public. This helps the various communities gain knowledge and apply it to their practices, thereby enhancing the health and wellness of youth and those interested in core health.
